History of La Gomera Airport

Aviation on the island of La Gomera began in the 1950s when a private airstrip was built. It was called "El Revolcadero," located on a hill west of the new airport.

This airfield had a runway (09/27), a hangar, and a small stand used as a control tower. The airport was for the owner's private use and for cargo and fumigation works.

In 1962, the island had many sanitary assistance problems, so studies to build an airport on the island began. Still, this plan was not carried out until 1975. However, the project was again delayed due to the Tenerife South Airport's opening and a new maritime line on the island.

In the 1980s, issues with wounded snake-bite evacuations necessitated building an airport on the island. On July 27, 1987, an agreement for the airport's construction was signed.

In 1991, the Spanish Airports and Air Navigation, locally known as Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegacion Aerea (AENA), took over the airport management and built a passenger terminal which was inaugurated in 1992. This passenger terminal has two floors and has typical Canarian architecture.
