History of Jerez Airport

In Victoria Beach in Cadiz, Spain, the first air shows were held in 1912. In 1913, they did it again over Jerez de la Frontera and Cadiz. Seaplanes were more popular than land planes in 1920. It was in 1929 that the port of Cadiz and the bay around it were opened to public and private aviation.

Massive troop transfers occurred from North Africa to mainland Spain as the Spanish Civil War broke out. A makeshift airstrip, the Jerez Aerodrome debuted in 1936 in Zarandilla, two kilometers southeast of the city center. Wine merchants pooled their resources to buy a jet at the height of the crisis. In any case, the money has been set aside to construct an airport.

An area eight kilometers northwest of Jerez was leveled down in 1937. In November, construction was completed, and a Transformation School was established at the airport to educate aspiring pilots. Haya Aerodrome was the official name of the facility until 1983. The airport first welcomed civilian and all internal and international tourist aviation traffic and commercial technical layovers in 1946.

Polymotor Aircraft School moved to Jerez Aerodrome in 1951, when it had just two landing runways with a sandy foundation, prompting the building of a hard runway the following year. As time progressed, the air base's infrastructure was finalized (runway extension, connecting runways, aircraft parking areas, navigational aids, communications equipment, etc.).

Jerez Air Station first welcomed foreign travelers in 1968. The next year, construction on a new terminal for travelers got underway. The aviation restrictions were made public in 1969, and construction on the new runway began the following year.

The Madrid–Jerez/Cádiz–Madrid route, operated by Aviaco, first took flight in 1975. After that point, traffic gradually converged. Aena started renovating the airport towards the end of 1991 to meet the growing demand for air travel.

The project called for a new power plant, a water purification plant, a fire protection facility, a two-story passenger terminal, and a link runway connecting the apron to the runway. A brand-new road provides access and parking for automobiles and buses. In 1992, the brand-new terminal and its accompanying facilities opened to the public.
