History of Santander Airport

In 1910, Santander hosted the first of many air festivals to come. Located west of the La Albericia neighborhood, the aviation field eventually became the city's first airport. In 1912, two hangars were built, and the airfield was leveled; in 1913, the Santanderino flying club was established; in 1915, the Semanas Aeronáuticas was first held.

Long after that, in 1921, the Franco Bilbana Aeronautical Transport Company's Network of Cantabrian Hydroplanes connected Santander to Bilbao and Bayonne via the sky. The establishment of a hydrogenation customs zone in the Bay of Santander was authorized to allow for these kinds of activities to take place there.

A new airport, Pontejos or Rubayo, was constructed east of the bay in 1936 and 1937, so activity at the La Albericia airport had to be split. The military base relocated to La Albericia after the civil war would have to make do with the town's already light civilian traffic.

It first opened its doors in 1948 to commercial and tourist traffic from all over the world. Iberia started its flight service to Madrid in July 1950.

However, by 1945, a new airport was considered a viable option due to La Albericia's limitations. Parayas in Maliao, located four kilometers south of the city, behind the bay, and next to the Raos marshlands, was chosen as the site for the airport after extensive research.

After opening the new airport in 1953, La Albericia was permanently shut down on the same day. There was a small terminal building, airport offices, customs, and a control tower at Parayas. The runway was 1,150 meters long and 70 meters wide.

The airport's runways and buildings were flooded by seawater in December 1959 after the tide breached the sea wall surrounding the wetlands. There was a lot of damage to the airport grounds. In the following years, a new dyke was constructed to keep the water out.

The Santander Airport name was given to Parayas in 1965, and the Air Rescue Service opened a base there in 1967. However, in 1973 it was decided that a major redesign was necessary because the airport had to be expanded again.

In addition to extending the runway to 2,400 meters, a new terminal building, transmission station, fire station, power plant, and control tower were built.

In 1976, the airport's lighting system was finished, including the runway and apron lights, the helicopter hangar, the water purification station, and the OM radio beacon. After extensive renovations, the airport reopened to the public on August 8, 1977.

Cantabria's most well-known international athlete, Seve Ballesteros, was honored with the renaming of the airport on April 16, 2015, when the BOE published the new name.
