Between 1951 and 1952, the runway was upgraded with rigid pavement and other features necessary for landing in poor visibility. Between 1955 and 1964, the airport was inaccessible to the general public. Aviaco, a company, started offering regularly scheduled flights in 1970.

Between 1972 and 1973, the works on the terminal began, and the taxiway, apron, and urbanization project contracts were awarded. The passenger arrival area was modernized by installing an ILS category I system in 1982. Runway 23 now has the capability of handling larger aircraft. The runway was expanded in 1990. An international airport was opened to the public on June 19, 1991. In the year 2000, a new terminal was opened.

Situated at the confluence of the Pisuerga and Esgueva rivers 15 km before they join the Duero, the city is surrounded by winegrowing areas and occupies a position roughly in the geographic center of the northern half of the Iberian Peninsula's Meseta Central. The Celtic Vaccaei inhabited the region before the Romans arrived, and the Romans eventually took over.

After its purported foundation in 1072, the city rose to prominence as part of the Crown of Castile, thanks to its collegiate church, university (1241), royal court and chancellery, and the royal mint, among other institutions.

Christopher Columbus perished in Valladolid, the site of Europe's first moral debate on the treatment of indigenous peoples. Between 1601 and 1606, it served as the capital of Habsburg, Spain. The old town features many different types of historic architecture, including houses, palaces, churches, plazas, avenues, and parks. Museums in the area include the Zorrilla and Cervantes homes and the National Museum of Sculpture. Holy Week, the Festival of Theatre and Street Arts, and the Valladolid International Film Festival are just some of the annual events in the city. As part of UNESCO's Creative Cities Network, Valladolid was named a City of Film in 2019.

Valladolid is one of Spain's most important commercial hubs. Since founding FASA-Renault in 1953 to assemble Renault-branded vehicles (later renamed Renault Espaa), the automotive industry has been a major driver of the city's economy. Sava was established in 1953 and began manufacturing trucks the following year.

Subsequently, Pegaso purchased Sava, and since 1990, Sava has been owned by Italian truck maker Iveco. Renault and Iveco, along with the French tire manufacturer Michelin, are the city's most important industrial companies.

Food processing (with local companies like Acor and Queseras Entrepinares and facilities of multinationals like Cadbury, Lactalis, or Lesaffre), metallurgy, chemical, and printing are also significant industrial sectors.
