History of Palma Mallorca Airport

The feasibility of establishing an airmail line to the Balearic Islands was investigated due to the Spanish government's interest in expanding airmail in the early 20th century. Finally, in 1921, seaplanes were used by the company Aeromartima Mallorquina to establish a mail service between Barcelona and Palma.

Son Sant Joan and Son Bonet, both of which were subsequently chosen for the construction of airports, served as testing grounds for this airline before it was ever established. Aero-Taxi de Mallorca was founded in 1934 to introduce commercial air travel to Mallorca and open a flight school in Son Sant Joan. It wasn't until the following year that Son Bonet saw the establishment of a second.

The forerunner to Iberia was the company Lneas Aéreas Postales Espaolas (Spanish Postal Airlines), which began operations in May 1935. After a month, on August 1st, Son Sant Joan airport became the hub for the first regularly scheduled airline service between Madrid and Palma, with a layover in Valencia. A new line was built between Palma and Barcelona in the subsequent year.

The military started using Son Sant Joan three years after Lufthansa and Iberia opened new lines in Son Bonet. Son Bonet eventually replaced the island's other airports as its primary civilian airport. In addition, Son Sant Joan Air Force Base's establishment constrained the airport's civilian use capacity.

By 1954, the runway had to be widened and paved so that F-86 Sabre fighters could use it; this required expanding the Palma - Llucmajor road. Those years saw the construction of the first paved taxiways and aprons. Many early European visitors to Son Bonet came via the airlines BEA, Air France, and Aviaco.
